Paul patisserie is a French chain bakery/café restaurant. Coming out of the station in Gloucester road I passed by Paul and there on the window display was this amazing puff pastry cake that caught my eyes. I stood there gazing for couple of minutes and wanted to know what that cake with a Golder crown is. Not only that I wanted to have one. It is as if this cake was made for me.
I immediately went in and asked one of the staffs what that cake is. He then told me it’s called GALETTE DES ROIS.
Galette des Rois is a King Cake. A delicious all butter puff pastry cake filled with luscious frangipane cream made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs and sugar. The Galette Des Rois is a very French tradition cake shared at Epiphany at the end of the Christmas season on the 6th January. It celebrates the arrival of the three wise men in Bethlehem.
During the festival season most household enjoys the King cake. They get together to share the Galette .A small charm hidden inside the cake and a golden paper crown on top. An opportunity to play a traditional French game to find out who will be King and Queen for the day.
The one who finds the charm in his slice will be crowned the king or Queen and be served like royalty all day.
